1. Overview
CommuteNEXT is a transit app with optional CommuteNEXT Plus purchases. You can use the core app without creating a CommuteNEXT account. Some features use Apple services or other data providers, and optional sharing features send the information you choose to share through iCloud. We do not sell your personal information or use it for targeted advertising.
2. Information and how we use it
Location and transit features
With your permission, the app uses your device location to show nearby stops and vehicles, help plan routes, and run location based alerts. Location is also used on your device for ride and walking features. Apple Maps and transit data providers may receive requests needed to provide maps, directions, or live transit information. Such requests can include network information, such as your IP address; a route or place search may include the location or places you select.
When you use the weather feature, the app sends coordinates for the selected or nearby area to Open-Meteo to obtain a forecast. You can turn off location permission in your device settings, though nearby and location based features may then be limited.
Saved rides and preferences
The app stores saved trains, stations, commute settings, and recorded ride history on your device. If iCloud ride history sync is available and enabled, recorded rides, including trip details and any recorded position trail, are also stored in your private iCloud database so they can appear on your devices. You can turn this sync off in the app's ride history settings and delete recorded rides in the app.
Trip buddies
If you start a Trip buddies share, the app stores your chosen display name, optional profile photo, trip label and ride details, current location, and any gestures you send in iCloud. Only people you invite and who accept the share can view the shared trip. A trip is set to expire after two hours. You can stop sharing sooner; the app attempts to remove the shared record when it can connect to iCloud. Your location is not shared with buddies merely because you accept someone else's invitation.
Community rider reports
If you publish a community report, the app sends the report type, vehicle and service details, the vehicle's map position, time, and any description or car location you enter to an iCloud public database. Other riders can see the report for about 30 minutes. Do not put personal information in report text. You can withdraw your own report in the app. Reports stop appearing in the app when they expire, but expiry does not itself guarantee immediate deletion of the underlying iCloud record.
Apple sign-in and purchases
If you choose Sign in with Apple, the app saves the Apple user identifier and the name you provide in the device Keychain. CommuteNEXT Plus subscriptions and any lifetime purchase are processed by Apple through the App Store. The app reads StoreKit product and transaction status to show offers and verify access. We do not receive your payment card details through the app. Apple handles billing, renewals, and refunds under its own terms and privacy policy.
Messages to us and website visits
If you email support, we receive the address, message, and information you choose to include so we can respond. This site is hosted by GitHub Pages. GitHub logs visitors' IP addresses for security purposes. The site itself does not set analytics or advertising cookies.
4. Your choices and controls
- Change or revoke location access in your device settings.
- Turn off iCloud ride history sync and delete ride records in the app. Turning sync off does not by itself delete records already stored in your private iCloud database.
- Stop a Trip buddies share in the app and remove your own community reports while they are active.
- Sign out of the optional Apple profile in the app. Manage or cancel subscriptions in your Apple account's subscription settings.
- Ask us about information associated with community features or support messages at the contact address below.
5. Retention and security
Local preferences and saved history remain until you remove them or the app's data is deleted. Shared buddy trips are designed to expire after two hours; reports are shown for about 30 minutes. Records held by Apple or other providers may persist according to their systems and policies. Support messages are kept as needed to handle the request. We use platform security features and encrypted network connections where available, but no online system is completely risk free.
6. Changes
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will post the revised policy here with a new effective date. Material changes will be communicated in the app or through another appropriate channel when required.
